In Madurese society, Indonesia. If a man abuses someone else’s wife. Then her husband will do “Carok” to maintain his wife’s pride.

Carok is a one on one fight to death. This tradition is only carried out if the party who is going to fight has received the approval of his family. In addition, Carok must be done in a quiet place and difficult to reach by the public.

Carok perpetrators must also wear Madurese traditional clothes and are only allowed to use sickles as weapons. Before Carok begins, there is an exchange of sickles and delivery of messages to they’re Respective families when killed.

“Carok is used as a tool to gain power and symbolizes strength for relatives and the social environment of the perpetrator” - Retno Hastijanti (2005)

In this tradition, the perpetrators who win will surrender themselves to the police. They feel more honored to go to prison because the revenge has been released.

They feel they deserve to kill people who have hurt their feelings and their families. For the Madurese, self-respect is everything, therefore they have great respect for their parents, wives and children.
